Medtronic Layoffs 2026 – Inside the Quiet Unwinding of a Medtech Giant

Nothing really reveals the Medtronic campus in Northridge when you stroll by it on a weekday morning. The cafeteria continues to hum with the same low chatter as it did a year ago, the parking lot continues to fill up, and the badges continue to beep at the turnstiles. However, those within are aware of what is about to happen and have been since the beginning of February. By April 7, eighty-one of them will be gone, and the others are silently attempting to determine if they will be the next.

It is a small number in and of itself. 81 jobs out of over 8,000 diabetes units worldwide. Approximately 1%. It hardly shows up on a spreadsheet in a company with almost 95,000 workers. However, that isn’t actually how layoffs operate, is it? They target engineers, IT personnel, marketing teams, and technicians—specifically, San Fernando Valley mortgage holders and students attending nearby schools. Although the rumors had been circulating for weeks, it became official on February 5 when the WARN notice was filed with the California Workforce Development Board.

In reality, there is more going on than just Northridge. In May of last year, Medtronic announced it would spin off its diabetes division as a publicly traded company, MiniMed. The next-generation MiniMed Flex insulin pump has already been submitted to the FDA, and the IPO paperwork was submitted at the end of 2025. It makes sense because Wall Street has been advocating for a “more focused Medtronic” for years, and diabetes has been a slower-growing portion of the portfolio. It was described by a spokesperson as “aligning resources and sharpening focus.” It appears to be believed by investors. Workers are not as persuaded.

Santa Rosa comes next. Because of the timeline involved, the news, which came in early May, affected Northridge more severely. After nearly thirty years in Sonoma County, Medtronic is closing its Santa Rosa operations completely. About 370 workers are impacted. Roles will relocate to Southern California, Minnesota, and Ireland during the phased shutdown that will last until spring 2028. It’s the kind of decision that gradually empties a building over two years, one farewell lunch at a time, rather than making a single news cycle.

These actions can be interpreted as either more uncertain or as cold restructuring. The difference between the S&P 500’s 67% increase and Medtronic’s 44% decline over the past five years is what activist investors are looking for. For some time, Elliott Management has been on the periphery of this narrative. Speaking with people in the industry, it seems that the cuts scheduled for 2026 are more about a leadership team attempting to demonstrate movement to a market that has grown impatient than they are about diabetes or Santa Rosa in particular.

The medtech sector as a whole isn’t exactly quiet either. In North Carolina, Baxter eliminated ninety jobs. A Thermo Fisher facility in Weaverville is being shut down. The WARN filings continue to come in from AngioDynamics, Endologix, and Labcorp. Medtronic is the biggest name on a longer list rather than an anomaly. It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the medical device industry, which has long been thought to be recession-proof, is experiencing something that it hasn’t quite named yet.

It’s still genuinely unclear what will happen next. For the planned separation to proceed smoothly, the MiniMed IPO must conclude by year’s end. Santa Rosa has two years to decide what to do with its talent. The remaining employees of Medtronic are observing everything and speculating as to whether 2026 was the end or merely the beginning.
