Long before the verdict, the numbers were released. €55 million. €263 million. €440 million. Figures so big that they hardly have any meaning other than to serve as weapons in a dispute that has already become personal.

By contrast, the Paris labor court’s decision was frank. Kylian Mbappé’s unpaid wages and bonuses totaling over €60 million were ordered to be paid by Paris Saint-Germain. Not everything he wanted, but enough to resolve the main conflict.

The case focused on Mbappé’s contract’s last few months, from April to June 2024, when he was still technically a PSG player but was becoming more and more problematic in real life. Bonuses and salaries were not paid. Attorneys became busy.

The context, not just the amount, was what gave the lawsuit resonance. For seven years, Mbappé served as PSG’s public face. billboards. Shirts are released. meticulously organized press conferences with Nasser al-Khelaifi.

At one point, it appeared to be a ten-year partnership. Then, in 2023, he decided not to extend his contract, which cost PSG a sizable transfer fee and drastically changed the game.

That year’s summer marked a sea change. Mbappé did not participate in a preseason tour. He worked out with fringe players. Even if no one spoke it out loud, the message was clear.

PSG claimed in public that they were acting legally. The relationship deteriorated in private. Only after discussions that would later become the focus of the lawsuit did Mbappé rejoin the first team.

PSG maintained that an agreement had been reached. that Mbappé agreed to take a lower salary in exchange for leaving on a free transfer. that loyalty, integrity, and safeguarding the club’s financial interests were at stake.

According to Mbappé’s attorneys, there was no such agreement. They posed a straightforward query to the court: “Where is the proof?”

The judges concurred. Notwithstanding any resentment over his departure, the court determined that the unpaid salaries and bonuses were due under the terms of the contract. According to the ruling, star players and injured clubs are not exempt from labor law.

PSG made a more dramatic counterclaim. damages of €440 million. “Loss of opportunity” the notion that Mbappé had deceived the team and charged a record transfer fee.

    That assertion was unsuccessful.

Rather, the court concentrated on what could be demonstrated, such as unfulfilled obligations, written contracts, and missed payments. The emotions surrounding the law were more expansive than the law itself.

Instead of portraying the decision as a victory, Mbappé’s representatives presented it as a principle. Promises need to be kept. Football teams are subject to employment law as well.

PSG released a statement that seemed to have been carefully crafted to prevent more harm. They would do as they were told. They could be appealing. They sent their best wishes to the player.

Appeal is still possible. Nobody anticipates a tidy conclusion to this tale.

All of this is still clouded by the bitterness of the break. The fact that PSG won the Champions League without Mbappé was mentioned enough times to seem incongruous. In the meantime, Mbappé fulfilled a move that had loomed over his career for years when he signed a free transfer to Real Madrid.

He has had a successful first season in Madrid. Objectives arrive on a regular basis. In contrast, the lawsuit felt like a ghost from a past existence.

But it was important. not only monetarily but also symbolically. There was no quiet resolution to this dispute between the agents. It was taken to court. The evidence was evaluated. There was an assertion of authority.

As I read the decision, I recall thinking about how narrow the distinction is between “club legend” and “legal adversary.”

Something unsettling about contemporary football was revealed by the Mbappé-PSG controversy. Until they aren’t, players are assets. Contracts are honored until they become problematic.

Mbappé was accused of bad faith by PSG. PSG was accused of harassment by Mbappé. Both assertions describe a relationship that was irreparably damaged.

Even though it doesn’t violate a contract, training with unwanted players leaves a mark. Pay withholding certainly does.

Mbappé met his sporting obligations, the judges observed. He engaged in play. He scored. He continued to show up until the last day.

    It was an important detail.

The timing also changed. The months that Mbappé was unpaid fell exactly when his future had already been decided. PSG lost leverage because it had changed.

Both sides are tempted to attribute this to greed. That would be indolent. What happened had to do with precedent, narrative, and control.

What does it mean for those at the bottom of the pyramid if a club the size of PSG can refuse to pay in a dispute like this? Underneath the legal arguments was that question.

During negotiations, Mbappé withdrew a separate harassment complaint, which his attorneys characterized as a conciliatory move. The relationship was not saved by it. It did highlight the extent to which this almost became ugly.

Not all doors are closed by the ruling. Appeals could prolong this. There are still unresolved claims.

However, a single line has been drawn. Contracts are required. Bonuses for loyalty don’t disappear when emotions shift.

Mbappé finds it difficult to reconcile the lawsuit with his skill on the field. It’s not the persona he fosters. But it’s a part of his tale.

For PSG, it serves as an expensive reminder that influence and wealth alone do not guarantee power.

Fairy tales are popular in football. One of them was never this.
