Harley-Davidson’s FLHC FXBB Softail Recall – What 17,000 Riders Need to Know Right Now

The way this recall came to light has an almost subdued quality. No fleet of ambulances, no dramatic crash footage, and no roadside viral video. One customer complained that his 2025 Low Rider ST’s rear brake wasn’t functioning properly sometime in early March. By the time engineers retrieved warranty and service records after that complaint reached Harley-Davidson’s Technical Subcommittee on March 5, three additional cases had surfaced, all of which pointed to the same issue: fluid loss and malfunctioning rear brakes on the narrow-frame Softails.

Nearly 17,000 motorcycles, including the FLHC Heritage Classic, FXBB Street Bob, FXLRS Low Rider S, and FXLRST Low Rider ST, were formally included in Campaign 26V234 by the time the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted the notice on April 13. This may have begun as a routing choice that appeared unimportant on a CAD screen. Usually, it does. Once the bike is vibrating its way through ten thousand miles of two-lane Midwestern traffic, engineers draw a line, a cable, a hose, and assume that clearance will hold. It doesn’t always.

The problem is located near the Body Control Module, the new electrical brain Harley incorporated into the updated Softail architecture, where the rear brake line passes. A hole in the line is worn by repeated contact—micro-abrasion, actually, the kind you wouldn’t notice until you pulled the tank and looked. There is a fluid leak. Although the company claims it is not yet aware of any actual accidents or injuries, riders may notice a puddle beneath the bike in the morning or a softer pedal than they recall. Because recalls can be both proactive and reactive, that final detail is crucial. This one seems more like the second.

The atmosphere in any Harley dealership right now is likely to be somewhere between annoyance and relief. annoyance since most owners have spring rides planned, and loaner bikes don’t exist in the Softail world. Harley caught this before someone rolled out of a stop sign and realized the lever was ineffective, which was a relief. The solution is simple: a new line if the old one exhibits wear and a redesigned BCM caddy that pushes the module farther away from the brake line. The new caddy is already present in units that were manufactured after March 18, indicating that the company quickly changed course after realizing what it was facing.

It’s easy to overlook the larger tension at play here. Harley-Davidson is currently undergoing a gradual and uncertain modernization. If the brand wants younger riders and cleaner integration with phones and accessories, the narrow-frame Softails were meant to showcase that new electrical architecture. However, with forty years of mechanical layout logic, each new module is a potential source of interference. Although the stock has moved sideways rather than upward, investors appear to think the company is handling the transition. This recall, which is minor in terms of money but noticeable in terms of reputation, doesn’t help the narrative.

Between April 20 and April 27, dealer notifications began to be sent out, and between May 18 and May 25, owner letters followed. On the NHTSA website, riders who are impatient can check their VIN directly. As this develops, it’s difficult to ignore how swiftly everything changed once the pattern became apparent: one client in early March, a formal recall by mid-April. That is essentially how the system operates. Milwaukee won’t know until the summer riding season is well underway whether it has an impact on consumers’ perceptions of the 2026 Softails.
